Docent Training

Docent TourDocent TourThe Met is actively seeking new volunteers for its year-round docent program! Docents are at the heart of the museum experience. They are a corps of trained volunteers who help visitors marvel at science in action and rediscover their sense of wonder when looking at works of art. By working closely with the Museum's educators and curators, Docents practice methods for promoting discussion focused on art objects and artifacts, travel to other cultural institutions to further their education and participate in open discussions and lectures on a regular basis. All of this involvement provides an incredible recipe that promotes life-long learning among the Docents as well as Museum visitors in search of a meaningful experience.

The Met will train qualified volunteers as Docents to lead schoolchildren and other visitors through the Museum. If you enjoy learning and sharing knowledge, the Docent program offers the opportunity to learn about other cultures, historical periods, artwork and artists. All ages are welcome. Volunteer Docents must have a genuine appreciation for all visitors, including adults and children from diverse backgrounds, and must convey information in a clear, concise, and articulate manner. Prior experience is not necessary but volunteers should be prepared to make a one-year commitment and offer at least one public tour per week.

If you are interested in becoming a Docent at the Met,
please call the Museum office for more information.

Docents are given background information and instruction in the science and art exhibitions at the Met as well as methods for touring adults and school children.

Art appreciation classes are also offered throughout the year. Please call Ann Wanger in the Education office at 559/441-1444,ext. 224 for further information.
