A free lecture series accompanies Crossroads. Artist Nicholas Spohrer, whose work is featured in the Art Gallery, speaks about his woodcuts on Thursday, October 25. Lisa Buckley, Children's Services Coordinator and Robyn Aguiar, Children's Librarian at the Fresno County Public Library discuss book illustrators using natural materials on Thursday, December 6. Lectures start at 6pm at the Reeves ASK Science Center, 933 Van Ness Ave.
Biographies
Nicholas Spohrer, Red Jacket from the series Old Hands, woodcut and foil wrappersNicholas Spohrer is a printmaker whose work focuses on the common yet powerful expressions of human existence. His work has been included in numerous group shows, for example, at Murray State University, Gallery 25 in Fresno, Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery in Lincoln, Kimball Art Center in Nebraska City as well as in Bulgaria and France. Spohrer was recipient of the Chaffin Scholarship and the Thomas P. Coleman Memorial Scholarship. He received his M.F.A from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and his B.A. from the University of California at Santa Cruz. He presently teaches at Fresno City College.
Lois Ehlert, cover for picture book Leaf Man, 2005Lisa Buckley is the Children’s Services Coordinator of the Youth Services Division at the Fresno County Public Library. She has presented papers at the annual conferences of the California Library Association (CLA) and the California School Library Association (CSLA). Buckley is presently a Fellow in the Urban Library Council’s Executive Leadership Institute (ELI) and the Chairperson of the CLA committee awarding the John and Patricia Beatty Award. She received her Master of Library and Information Science degree from San Jose State University and her B.A. in Ethnic Studies/Asian American Studies from California State University, Sacramento.
Robyn Aguiar is Children’s Librarian and has worked at the Fresno County Public Library for eight years. She is currently completing her Masters in Library and Information Science. Her interests include art, gardening, and cats. She lives with her husband in Fresno and has three adult children.
