FADE: The Dark Side of Light
Ever wonder what goes into making sure your favorite works of art are there for future generations? Or why you’re never allowed to take flash photography in a museum? FADE: The Dark Side of Light will answer all those questions and more when it is on view at the Fresno Metropolitan Museum beginning November 13, 2008. The exhibition will be on view on the Museum’s first floor in the Reeves Family ASK Science Center.

This 100 year old photograph shows damage from exposure to light. The exhibit FADE: The Dark Side of Light explores the effects of light exposure on priceless museum treasures and family photographs and offers suggestions for mitigating the damage. features a blend of art and science in its themes, exploring the effects of light over time on works of art and how art is protected by museums and galleries from damage by light. The exhibition’s interactive exhibits explain the nature of light and why it permanently changes the appearance of many objects. Using their own energy, guests can create traveling waves of different lengths to better understand the relationship between wavelength and energy. Then through an AV program, guests can zoom in and learn how light damages materials at the atomic level.
