The Met surveyed hundreds of teachers to learn how to better serve their needs during the renovation of the Museum building. The response: “Please come to our classrooms with an art project!”

The Docent Outreach Project allows teachers in grades 1 through 3 to take advantage of the Met’s high quality programming without traveling to the museum. Five art projects are available and include printmaking, sculpture, collage, and two new lessons - Native American basketry and jigsaw puzzles. Drawn from the Met’s Permanent Collection, the new lessons provide an insight for children on the nature of a Permanent Collection, its relevance to their lives and a standards-based art experience. Each inquiry-based lesson is one hour long and features hands-on art instruction on the related topic.

The Docent Art Outreach Program can assist teachers in meeting the Visual and Performing Arts Content Standards for California Public Schools.
